Studs And Snowmobiling
The use of studs are a very important yet a very misunderstood aspect of snowmobiling,
It has been the perception of anti studders that They do damage to the trail while the truth
is quite to the contrary, The fact is that tracks without studs have more tendency to spin
and ultimately do more damage to the trail than ones with studs, especially deep lug and
paddle tracks.
The fact is that an unstudded sled is very unsafe due to a lack of grip on icy trails; also a
studded track will grip and not spin in most hard pack conditions, and in soft snow all
tracks will spin.
Another misconception is that studs are for increased speed on the trails, This as well is
not true, People who choose to run studs are the most conscientious riders on the trail
because they are interested in the one thing that studs represent, SAFETY, the ability to
keep their sled on the trail and the ability to stop in unexpected icy conditions I feel very
strongly that an unstudded machine is an unsafe machine on the trail due to a lack of
control, If you are not running studs please seriously consider it for your safety and
others on the trail and help dispel the myths and untruths that are plaguing the sport by
promoting their use and not fueling the anti stud fire.
